What is Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP)?
SCP simply stands for Sustainable Consumption and Production. Every day we buy products and services that are produced by industry. SCP wants to green this cycle of manufacturing, buying and using of products.
Principles of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP):
There are many SCP practices that we use to make our lives more sustainable. It can be as simple as turning off unnecessary lights. Industry can implement SCP by recycling and not disposing waste. Demanding and buying green products is a positive and progressive move towards SCP.
Why SCP policies for Sri Lanka?
As environmental problems increase, it has become clear that communities across the world need to adopt more sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns in order to reduce both the use of natural resources and CO2 emissions. SCP focuses on more environmentally friendly and socially fair ways of designing, producing, using, and recycling of products and services. SCP strategies can improve the efficiency with which industry uses re-sources, and can change the consumption patterns of people so they live within the limits of the planet. Indirectly, SCP can alleviate poverty and provide social protection and access to basic needs and services. The SCP approach applies life cycle thinking, which considers the impacts from all life cycle stages of the production and consumption process.
The project employs SCP TOOLS such as green procurement, life cycle thinking, eco-labelling and eco-innovation. The project will introduce financial mechanisms to scale-up sustainable products and services.
